Senior Program at Fairfax

Where Hope and Healing Begin

We recognize that older adults may benefit from Senior Programs that include occupational therapy, group therapy, and life skills coaching with other senior patients who are experiencing a psychiatric disturbance related to age. Seniors with depression, mood disorders and chronic thought disorders may all be exacerbated by age. Seniors also have specific life experiences that can cause issues like depression, anxiety, hopelessness related to the loss of a loved one, declining physical health or loss of independence. The staff for our Senior Progam is trained and experienced to recognize and intervene with these conditions and use the multidisciplinary approach designed around a senior population. In addition, consideration is made for some of the other age-related issues, such as grab bars throughout the facility, medical beds in some rooms for patients who need specific bed adjustments, and special psychiatric training in the interactions of psychotropic medications to a senior’s metabolism. Our Senior Program also includes occupational therapy and life skills coaching. Occupational therapy for seniors is a treatment designed to help individuals live a more productive and independent life.

Wisdom
Patients find strength at Fairfax Hospital.
Purpose

Like all of our inpatient programming, the Senior Program is a short-term intervention. As a Psychiatric treatment, it is not effective with patients that require memory care or have organic brain dysfunction (Dementia or Alzheimer’s). Families and others may be confused about the difference. This is very understandable since Psychiatric disorders and brain disorders may appear to present very similar. Our trained Assessment and Referral staff, in consultation with our Medical Staff, are typically able to screen these distinctions to ensure that patients are in the right program for their needs. Occupational therapy or life skills coaching may be the right fit, while others may benefit from psychotherapy groups and therapy.

Real-world — Healthy — therapeutic activities seniors enjoy.

Our Senior Program offers multiple therapeutic groups on a daily basis that are designed to help identify treatment issues and offer positive coping skills. In addition to group psychotherapy, psycho-education groups and goals group, we also provide other therapeutic interventions and supports such as yoga, drama, music appreciation, art and occupational therapy.

Visitations – Communication – Daily Schedule

What does a day at Fairfax look like?

Each day is comprised of multiple group therapies designed to help identify treatment issues and then develop or enhance coping strategies. In addition to group psychotherapy, psycho-education groups and goals groups, there are also invigorating forms of therapeutic intervention including yoga, drama, music appreciation, art and recreation therapies.

Family Matters at Fairfax

Engaging with family is an integral part of the treatment focus. We encourage family and friends to be advocates of the healing and treatment process. Family encouragement and support provides better outcomes for our patients.

How do I communicate with my loved one?

Your loved one will be provided with a unique access code shortly after they are admitted. The patient has full discretion whom they give the access code to. The access code is required for visitation and communication purposes.

When can I visit?

Our patients days are highly structured with programs, routines, scheduled meals, provider meetings, therapy, activities and more. We have a very strict visitation policy to ensure our patients have the best treatment outcome possible. Visiting hours can be found here. Please review our visitation guidelines before visiting here.
